THE MUSEUM
THE BUILDING

The Archaeological Civic Museum of Sarteano is located inside Palazzo Gabrielli, which shows a 16th-century structure with clear pre-existing elements from the Middle Ages, such as the so-called 'door of the dead' placed in the second room: it is located much higher than the street level because it was accessed through a staircase that was withdrawn at night and offered security, until then lost its daily use and was used to pass exclusively the coffins to load them on the cart. On the ceiling of the second room appears the coat of arms of the Gabrielli family and numerous chimneys adorn the rooms on the first floor, while in the basement, once used as cellars, you can see the foundations directly resting on the local travertine bench, the same in which they are excavated the Etruscan hypogea of which exhibits are exposed, creating an evocative reference.

HISTORY
The Museum was inaugurated on September 27, 1997, to bring together the finds preserved in the warehouses of the National Archaeological Museum of Florence, coming from the excavations of the second half of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as well as bringing you also the small nucleus of materials belonging to the 'Municipal Antiquarium and until 1995 exposed in the halls of the Palazzo Comunale and a private collection, the Bologni, donated to the Museum. In the course of the decades, material from single and extemporaneous discoveries converged in Florence, while the only systematic researches in the territory were those carried out in the years 1951-54 by Guglielmo Maetzke in the necropolis of Solaia-Macchiapiana-Mulin Canale and Pianacce, researches to which our Museum has dedicated a publication in 2010 (see below). On the other hand, the large number of artefacts, about 800, which made up the Fanelli collection, all coming from excavations from 1824-25 in the Solaia necropolis and which were offered as gifts in 1826 to the Grand Duke Leopoldo, did not return to the territory of origin. , being part of the granducale collections now historicized, have remained at the Museum of Florence. Just as it is conserved almost entirely in the Archaeological Museum of Siena, today inside the Santa Maria della Scala complex, the conspicuous Bargagli collection started in 1835 with the discovery of the tomb of the Sentinate Cumere family in Le Tombe that has returned some of the most beautiful urns of Chiusi production and later formed mainly by Piero Bargagli in the second half of the nineteenth century, in particular with the findings at Sferracavalli of the great Villanovan-orientalizing necropolis.

These materials were exhibited in Sarteano in the Palazzo Bargagli, as shown in this photo, until in 1941, when they fell less to the testamentary legate of 1918 in which they left as a gift to the Museum of Florence with the request to leave them on the spot - they were transferred to Siena where they are still today. Therefore, if we exclude the Bargagli who tended at least to keep the indications of the places of origin of the objects, while confusing the outfits, the intensive 19th century excavations, such as those Borselli or Lunghini, were made with the sole purpose of creating large collections on which to profit. Without mentioning the immense heritage that came out in the course of two centuries with a continuous dripping from the territory of Sarteano to go to increase the antique market by converging in museums around the world, such as the Louvre, the British Museum, various American museums, losing the datum of provenance or indicating it under a generic "Chiusi" origin, up to the recent burglary excavations that have continued from the post-war period to today depleting a huge patrimony that, if it had remained in place, would have enriched the local community as a whole.

In this context, the birth of the Sarteano Museum also arises as that of a territorial garrison that has become immediately, thanks to the activity of the Etruria Archaeological Group, which was reconstituted in 1996, a promoter of excavation to safeguard those parts of heritage still not completely destroyed. In this riverbed the excavation works in the necropolis of Solaia- Macchiapiana- Mulin Canale in 1996-97 and of Albinaia in 1999 have highlighted important testimonies for the chronological definition of the hypogea, even in contexts always looted. In 1997 the necropolis of the Palazzina was investigated in full, of which there was no news before our intervention, but which also suffered a heavy looting, finding a large lot of materials that were promptly restored and exposed since immediately at the time of the inauguration of the Museum. In addition, starting in 2000, the Municipality of Sarteano, under concession, with the direction of the Museum and with the work of the Archaeological Group, excavates the Pianacce necropolis, discovered by Maetzke in 1954 and already subjected to archaeological constraints since 1984, in 21 tombs have been found at the moment including the extraordinary painted tomb of the Infernal Quadriga and an important sacred theater area. These excavations have yielded, despite being all the graves already brutally violated by illegal immigrants, over 300 new artifacts that were promptly restored in our restoration laboratory and went to set up in September 2009 all the new wing on the ground floor of the museum dedicated in full precisely to the Pianacce necropolis. The last discoveries shown in May 2011 are those of the findings of June 2010, in a sort of "record" between excavation times - cleaning - restoration - study - exhibition that is one of the prides of our Museum.

The Gruppo Archeologico Etruria (GAE) is a group of volunteers that was formed in 1986 to assist the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage in the activity of protection with inspections and surveys on the territory of Sarteano. The activity of those years found its peak in the excavation of the Roman settlement of Peschiera Giannini in collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Florence and in 1989 with the organization of the exhibition "Sarteano Etrusca. Antiques collecting and nineteenth-century archaeological discoveries "which brought to the territory some Sarteano materials dispersed in Italian museums.

The GAE was then "refounded" in 1996 when the local interest in archaeological issues was stimulated by the project to set up the local Civic Museum, whose inauguration in September 1997 saw a simultaneous fervor of excavation activities that significantly increased the of the nascent Museum.

In 1996, a series of Hellenistic chamber tombs excavated in the rock at Mulin Canale were unearthed; many discoveries were made in that year also in the adjacent necropolis of Macchiapiana-Solaia where among the other findings were also recovered the remains of two canopy.

1997 was an important year as it was found a tomb painted in the necropolis of the Palazzina and the whole tomb of chamber tombs of the V- VI century BC. and the upper ones of the Roman period. The beautiful artifacts found there are now on display in the Museum and form one of the most significant rooms of the exhibition.

Subsequently, in addition to resuming the reconnaissance of the territory for the drafting of the archaeological map, the GAE has carried out research in the locality Albinaia, seat of an important though poor necropolis of the first half of the VII a.C.

From 2001 to 2011 the Pianacce necropolis was successfully investigated, with chamber tombs ranging from the late sixth to Roman times. The excavation took place under the concession of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities; the dealer was the Mayor of Sarteano, the scientific direction was the director of the Museum and the excavation was conducted entirely with the workforce of the GAE, so as always with costs close to zero. This model, rather peculiar in Italy, has allowed extraordinary discoveries, with a negligible expense has led to the highlighting of one of the most important sites of northern inner Etruria.

In fact, 2003 was undoubtedly the most fortunate year for the Gae because during the annual excavation campaign in the monumental necropolis of Pianacce, on October 11th the "Tomb of the Infernal Quadriga" was found, one of the discoveries more significant in the field of Etruscanism in recent decades.

Between 2007 and 2009 a sacred area was unearthed: a large podium-altar intended for funeral rituals, connected with three underlying hypogea, also a unicum in Etruria.

Museu Cívico Arqueológico de Sarteano.

O MUSEU

TOSCANA
