A square of glass and concrete designed by Roland Simounet, hidden in the heart of the forest ... This good surprise is discovered after a walk of one hour along the GR13.

At the exit of the station of Nemours, it takes a good hour to reach on foot the museum of Prehistory. But it is the occasion of a beautiful stroll on the GR13 trail, which crosses the old center and its castle, then the Loing and the suburbs, before entering the forest. Here, as in the vast massif of Fontainebleau, nearby, trails weave between imposing blocks of sandstone, and rub shoulders with sandbanks, pines and oaks. The museum appears at the end of the road, "set up like a hunting camp among the trees and the rocks" (1), to use the words of its architect, Roland Simounet, who died in 1996, of which it is the masterpiece. He is also the museum of Villeneuve-d'Ascq and the transformation of the hotel Salé before he welcomes the Picasso Museum. In Nemours, Roland Simounet wanted a space filled with "dreams and memories", but it became urgent to preserve it from water leaks: eight months of closure were necessary to carry out the sealing works and the replacement of one hundred and sixty bay windows.

The collections, which range from the Paleolithic to the Iron Age,
are highlighted by concrete and the quality of light.

A space filled with dreams and memory
Installed in a 50-meter square, the museum incorporates some of Le Corbusier's principles: rough formwork concrete, open plan, wide openings and an interior access ramp that allows for a real architectural stroll. Upstairs, the museum offers a discovery of prehistory through four major periods from the Paleolithic, there are six hundred thousand years, at the end of the Iron Age, the first traces of the man to the end of the Gauls. Among the objects presented, some fascinate: like the nucleus, these flint blocks whose chips were used in the manufacture of tools, the remains of an eight thousand year old canoe, or even the engraved pebble of Etiolle, representing a horse: "undoubtedly the" highlight "of the collection", according to curator Anne-Sophie Leclerc.

The climates of the prehistoric eras
These objects are highlighted by the concrete furniture, also designed by Romand Simounet, and the splendid quality of light, thanks to the openings and the six patios that mark the course: four of them host indoor gardens evoking the climates of prehistoric eras. The fig tree, the laurel and the boxwood, which accompanied the first steps of the man in the region, belong to species of which traces were found during excavations in Vernou-la-Celle-sur-Seine, nearby from Nemours. Among the most recent objects, the Roman remains (ex-voto, pottery, glasses and carafes funeral) compose sublime still lifes.
