‘Living With Gods: Peoples, Places and Worlds Beyond’ at British Museum.. - "Vivendo com deuses: povos, lugares e mundos além" no British Museum.

The British Museum in London is currently hosting an exhibition of works titled “Living With Gods: Peoples, Places and Worlds Beyond.” The show runs through April 2018.

The exhibition explores the practice and expression of religious beliefs connected with the lives of countless individuals and communities throughout the world. It also looks at the benefits and risks of these behaviors when it comes to co-existence and conflict in societies, for example, 17th–18th-century Japan, China, and the Soviet Union, as well as modern Europe. Belief being the key aspect of human behavior, the show not only takes note of the mystical and sociological aspects of this but also the neurological and psychological triggers that come with it. It examines behaviors related to everything from modern urban ideas of wellness and mindfulness to pilgrimage and prayer. The installation includes pieces from the end of the last Ice Age that depict beings that do not exist in nature, to objects of everyday practices from all periods such as an 18th-century replica of a Hindu ceremonial chariot that is used to be pulled from a temple to reveal deities during festivals, a Chinese badge that celebrates ‘Mao’s mangoes,’ and posters related to Soviet scientific atheism.

The show is a part of the fourth collaborative project between the British Museum, the BBC, and Penguin Books. The museum has taken a fresh and innovative approach to the design of the exhibition. It incorporates sounds, music, and silence that are generally associated with religious practice coupled with moments of surprise, achieved through atmospheric lighting effects.

“Living With Gods: Peoples, Places and Worlds Beyond” runs through April 8, 2018, at British Museum, Great Russell St, Bloomsbury, London WC1B 3DG, UK.

Miki Garcia, the new director of the ASU Art Museum,
stands by "A Dream on a Dream," by Robert Colescott.

Since Miki Garcia took over the position of director of the ASU Art Museum in December 2017, she said she has been working to redefine the purpose of museums while continuing the ASU legacy of innovation and inclusivity.

Garcia said she wants to make the museum-going experience more informal and appealing to the ASU community and showcase the museum's permanent collection, established in 1950 with a donation from Oliver B. James, more frequently.

She also said she would like to potentially loan parts of the collection to other museums, universities and community colleges as a way of networking so that more people will be able to see the work.

“Part of our job is to create networks with other institutions that are doing work to serve different communities,” Garcia said.

In addition to showcasing its permanent collection, the ASU Art Museum hosts traveling exhibits and invites guest curators to discuss topics, like with a recent show exploring different definitions of the American Dream.

“One thing I’ve really been interested in as a museum leader is thinking about museums as transformative spaces," Garcia said. "I want everyone to be able to be transformed by the power of the arts."

Garcia credited her father's involvement in the Chicano Civil Rights Movement and her exposure to Latin American art at a young age as the main reasons why she is passionate about social issues. She also emphasized the importance of a museum's role as a place to have informal conversations about these issues.

“Often times, museums only think of strategies in terms of what's on the wall in the galleries, but they have the power to do so much more,” she said.

Garcia hopes to establish collaborations with other museums like the one between the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Vincent Price Art Museum in California.

“The director of the Vincent Price Art Museum, Pilar Tompkins (Rivas) is one of my very dear friends," Garcia said.

She and Tompkins Rivas both want to make sure their museums are accountable to their respective communities, Garcia said.

Garcia said a decreasing number of people are frequenting museums because people have come to expect interactive experiences because of the prevalence of technology.

“I think museums have this stigma where people see them as very uppity. It's very upper class,” said X-Avier Corrales, a museum student ambassador and graduate student studying secondary education. “They're not just places for rich people to talk about Rembrandt for hours.”

Garcia also said there is a lack of interest from a lot of young people and people of color because art museum’s and art in general are wrongfully seen as exclusive.

She said it's important to make sure the art displayed at museums represents different cultures, and that they represent their communities in the way they hire, market themselves and engage the community.

Garcia said being inclusive and engaging sounds simple, "however, if we look at the way museums have been doing things, we can see that it’s actually really radical."

In 2010 the Center For The Future of Museums reported that the majority of museum leaders and museum patrons in the U.S. are white.

She believes the way museums engage their communities is unsustainable long term. She plans to host monthly events to engage the community and address this issue.

Garcia also said she wants to incorporate live performances and family-oriented events to invite the community to the museum.

Tiffany Ana Lopez, director of the School of Film, Dance and Theatre, said Garcia understands the value of art and its role in society.

“We are lucky to have her. She’s been actively inviting all the directors of the Herberger Institute to be partners in thought,” Lopez said. “She wants to teach the community to value art through community engagement and is having important conversations.”

Allie Bice
미키 가르시아 (Miki Garcia) ASU 미술관 신임 이사는 로버트 콜 스콧 (Robert Colescott)의 "꿈에 관한 꿈 (Dream on a Dream)"이라는 뜻이다.

(Center For The Future of Museum)는 미국의 박물관 지도자 및 박물관 이용자의 대다수가 희소하다고보고했습니다.

Miki Garcia

Unjustly forgotten since the seventeenth century, the Caravaggesque painter remembers our memory, in a sumptuous retrospective at the Musée d'Arts in Nantes.

Caravagesque never stop coming out of the shadows! Since the rediscovery of Caravaggio (1571-1610) in the 1950s, his followers are reappearing as and when research. The latest to come back to the fore (after Valentin de Boulogne, at the Louvre, last year), Nicolas Régnier (1588-1667), Flemish from Maubeuge and trained in Antwerp, whose work scattered in the museums of the world whole had never been entitled to a retrospective. It was a shame. Result of a long-term work, the formidable exhibition of the Museum of Arts of Nantes presents about forty paintings (and as many lenders) of this painter totally unknown to the public but famous in his time, which ended his career in Venice, rich and adulated.

Caravaggesque, Regnier becomes when he arrives in Rome in 1617, seven years after the death of the master, and falls into the broth of this painting extirpating the darkness of the characters straight out of the street. From the beginning of the journey, a Saint Matthew and the Angel (1617), depicting an old man with greasy hair and an angel with trapeze artist's arms, shows however that being emulated by the master does not mean copying. Régnier's painting is distinguished by a more marked sensuality, a taste for fabrics, a piercing elegance under the rustic.

The painter plays as much of the power of chiaroscuro as the contrast between sophistication and realism, like one of the masterpieces of the exhibition, Card Players and Fortune Teller (1623), who came from Budapest. Based on a classic theme of caravagism, he invented a complex ballet of games of hands, looks and scams to find in every corner, from the tarry background to the crimson drape of the courtesan's dress, flexible and unctuous like a cherry ice cream. Inseparable from the band of Dutch caravagges settled in Rome, Regnier painted and partied with them, then married and left for Venice in 1626. Radical change, life and painting, very striking here, when his virtuosity goes to work of the market.

As the art historian Roberto Longhi, "discoverer" of Caravaggio, used to say, "[Regnier returns] his Caravaggio party card and dilutes himself in the waters of the lagoon". In view of what has gone before, we do not hold it to him.
