Retrospective of Basquiat arrives in São Paulo on the anniversary of the city.

With 80 pieces, a retrospective of the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat arrives in São Paulo on the anniversary of the city (January 25). Despite his short career, between 17 and 27 years old, the New Yorker had an intense production, being considered one of the most important names of the decade of the 80. The works exhibited in the Cultural Center Banco do Brasil, in the center of the São Paulo capital, present the painter, draftsman and engraver from the beginning of his career with graffiti until the peak of the process, when he reached a high level of value in the art market.

Jean-Michel Basquiat was a American artist. He gained popularity first as a graffiti artist in the city where he was born and then as a neo-expressionist.

"His work kept up to date, a fascination of both the visual and aesthetic aspects and the content," says curator Pieter Tjabbes, commenting on how the work still shows a strong appeal, especially among young people. "He has an intuitive job. He inserts everything he is doing, thinking, what is happening around him enters the works, whether in images or words. He's a sponge, "he adds, explaining a bit about Basquiat's method, which used to leave the radio and television connected at the same time while working in the studio. "He was bombarded with all this information all the time."

Intense process

This stimulation with elements from diverse sources seems to be, in the curator's opinion, one of the traits that brings the artist closer to the present generations. "He is in constant contact with the surrounding world. This may be part of the appeal you have today, this new generation is fully tuned, 24 hours a day connected in information. "

The immersion was so intense that even the apartment where he lived became part of his work. "He paints everything in the apartment: the refrigerator, the bathroom door," comments the curator. This door, as well as other similar objects used as support by the artist - window frames and pieces of wood - can be seen on the show. The exhibition is, according to Tjabbes, the biggest of the artist made in Brazil.

The odd talent and effort brought rapid results to the young artist. In 1982, at the age of 21, he participated in the Documenta de Kassel, Germany, one of the main contemporary art shows in the world. The renown made the value of his works also rise rapidly, one reason, according to Tjabbes, why it is difficult to find Basquiat's works in museums and public institutions. "When museums became interested, prices were already prohibitive. The result is that relatively few museums have works of it in collections, "he says. The works of the CCBB exhibition are from a private collection.

Music and Negritude

Despite the rapid rise, Basquiat still felt affected by racism, and the black theme was a constant presence in his works. "He was a black, African American artist, in an art medium that was almost totally white. So, the work always permeates this bias of criticism about the system. Basquiat highlights a lot of important blacks in music and sports, "recalls the curator.

A exposição é, segundo Tjabbes, a maior do artista feita no Brasil.

Museums of Berlin return works acquired in auction of the Nazi regime.

Margarete Oppenheim's collection has been described as one of Germany’s largest and most valuable.

Two Berlin museums have returned works to the heirs of a Jewish collector who liquidated them during World War II, according to the Foundation of Prussian Cultural Heritage.

The foundation returned 11 works from the Museum of Decorative Arts and the Skulpturensammlung that had belonged to Margarete Oppenheim, whose family was forced to sell them at a deflated price to the National Socialists in 1936.

Margarete Oppenheim, widow of the chemist and industrialist Franz Oppenheim, died in 1935, six years after her husband. Her collection has been described as one of Germany’s largest and most valuable, containing works by Impressionists and small sculptures, as well as of porcelain, majolica, faience and silver work.

The state arranged for the return of the works in keeping with the 20-year-old Washington Declaration signed by 44 countries committing themselves to seeking long-lost artwork that ended up in museums and other public collections. Germany was among the signers.

Five of the 11 works returned to the Oppenheim heirs were repurchased by the museums — two paintings on Christian religious themes from the 16th-century Donau School, and three 18th-century porcelain objects produced by the Meissen and Frankenthal firms.

The foundation has overseen the return of some 350 works of art and more than 1,000 books to the heirs of persecuted Jews.

Its president, Hermann Parzinger, said in a statement that he was grateful to the heirs for their role in coming to a “fair and just solution,” and added that the foundation remained dedicated to researching the provenance of works in Berlin museums.

Imke Gielen, spokeswoman for the law firm of Rowland & Associates, said the heirs appreciated the foundation’s procedure for return of the works, as well as the “tireless efforts of the foundation” to uncover the history of the works in its collection.

According to the foundation, Margarete Oppenheim had ordered the executors of her estate to auction her works after her death “at the most appropriate moment” and reinvest the funds in her estate. But because the auction took place in May 1936, at a time when Jews were being persecuted and pressured to divest of their property at greatly deflated value, the auction is considered to have been forced and thus illegitimate, according to the Washington Declaration.

Provenance researchers have found two additional objects that Margarete Oppenheim had lent to the museums personally and were never returned.

New excavations on the remote Greek island of Keros have uncovered evidence of spectacular feats of engineering and monumental architectural works that, researchers say, make it one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the Aegean.

The island features a natural, pyramid-shaped, rocky headland – known as the promontory of Dhaskalio – which is covered in "remarkable" constructions. Around 4,500 years ago, skilled builders carved massive terrace walls into the natural rock, making the promontory look like a man-made stepped pyramid.

On the flat surfaces created by the terraces, they constructed impressive, gleaming structures using around a thousand tonnes of stone, painstakingly imported from the island of Naxos.

And hidden underneath the rocky 'pyramid', archaeologists found a complex network of drainage tunnels – which predate the advanced indoor plumbing of the Mycenaean palace in Knossos by a thousand years. It is unclear at present, if this system was designed for sewage or fresh water.

Furthermore, they uncovered evidence of advanced metalworking, including two workshops, a lead axe and fragments of metalworking equipment.

The promontory of Dhaksalio is now essentially a tiny islet due to the rising sea level. However, 4,500 years ago it was attached via a narrow causeway to Keros – which, according to previous research, was a maritime sanctuary, centre of power and pilgrimage destination where mysterious rituals took place involving broken marble objects.

The island – once part of the so-called Cycladic civilisation – is known for its thousands of strange, flat-faced marble statues, which inspired the work of artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henry Moore.

A map showing the location of Keros. Cambridge Keros Project

According to Colin Renfrew from the University of Cambridge, who served as co-director of the excavation, Dhaksalio "may have become a focus because it formed the best natural harbour on Keros, and had an excellent view of the north, south and west Aegean".

Dhaskalio is now a deserted and protected site, but 4,500 years ago it was densely populated. However, evidence suggests it was unlikely to have been self-sufficient, meaning maintaining the settlement would have taken a great communal effort. Food, stone and ore for metalworking would all needed to be imported.

"What we are seeing here with the metalworking and in other ways is the beginnings of urbanisation: centralisation, meaning the drawing of far-flung communities into networks centred on the site, intensification in craft or agricultural production, aggrandisement in architecture, and the gradual subsuming of the ritual aspects of the sanctuary within the operation of the site," said Michael Boyd from the University of Cambridge, co-director of the excavation.

"This gives us a clear insight into social change at Dhaskalio, from the earlier days where activities were centred on ritual practices in the sanctuary to the growing power of Dhaskalio itself in its middle years," he said.
