This March, the Museum of Sacred Art in Funchal organizes the second edition of the event called "The Conferences of the Museum", in a year in which the Old Continent Europe carries out a broad reflection on the multifaceted European cultural heritage. Awareness of its importance is essential. Participation requires prior registration.
"Questions of Sacred Art", clarifies the MASF, is the motto of these Conferences, which aim to contribute to the reflection on the island's history and cultural assets of the Catholic Church, seen in the framework of this European heritage whose relevance is indicated in 2018.
"Crossing the history and its legacies with the contemporary look is the proposal of these Conferences", clarifies the direction of the MASF. The program is organized according to two thematic panels, namely "Expressions of Religious Cultural Heritage", which assumes "as a space for analysis and reflection on the historical perspective and challenges to the cultural assets of the Church, between the tangible and the immaterial, from the primitive contexts to the transit to museums and exhibitions, from the past to the contemporary "; and "The Construction of the Sacred Space", which problematizes the boundaries of the definition of the religious space, summoning multiple glances on the becoming of architecture and the visual arts in mediation with the sacred, between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
The initial framework of this cultural event also notes the contribution of Tolentino Mendonça, a priest and poet from Madeira, at an opening conference, whose theme is "Art, Mediation and Symbol: The Meaning that Comes."
Guilherme d'Oliveira Martins, national coordinator of the European Year of Cultural Heritage program, will make an intervention. Also within the scope of the Conferences will be the film "Sacred" by Nuno Grande, to mark the closing of two days of sharing of knowledge around art, heritage and museology.
The Museum of Sacred Art of Funchal, in the center of the city, annually receives approximately 15 thousand visitors. Of these, 95% are tourists. But educational services annually promote free visits for about three thousand young people and students.
The conferences begin on March 1st with an address by the director of the Museum, João Henrique Silva. The Tolentino Mendonça conference follows, at 10:15 a.m., followed by a debate. In the afternoon, panel 1, "Questions of Sacred Art: Expressions of Religious Cultural Heritage" will be held, where Duarte Nuno Chaves from the University of the Azores will be moderator. Nuno Saldanha (IADE - European University) will speak at 2.30 pm on Sacred Art, Cult, Culture and Heritage. Half an hour later, Maria Isabel Roque, from the European University, will speak on the theme "The Sacred Art: museums and exhibitions in a secularized society". At 3:30 pm, Helena Rebelo (University of Aveiro / University of Madeira) discusses "The Tradition of" Saloias "on the visits of the insignia of the Holy Spirit in the Autonomous Region of Madeira: to muse an intangible heritage?
At 4:15 p.m., Sandra Saldanha, from the National Secretariat of Cultural Assets of the Church, will talk about their cultural management and mission. At 4:45 pm, Joaquim Ganhão, from the Diocesan Museum of Santarém, will address this institution and "The visible face of a broad project to safeguard and enhance the cultural heritage of the Diocese." Following debate, again moderated by Duarte Nuno Chaves.
On March 2, panel 2, where issues of sacred art in focus will be this time "The construction of sacred space", will be moderated by Duarte Caldeira, of the Office of Massa Gray Projects. At 9:30 am Bernardo Pizarro Miranda, from the University Institute of Lisbon, will address the subject "Is there a religious architecture?", And half an hour later, the nature of this same architecture in Portugal, XX and XXI, will be the theme of the lecture by João Alves da Cunha, from the Portuguese Catholic University. João Norton Matos, from the Jesuit College in Paris, will give an address entitled "Arts and architecture in the mediation of the sacred", followed at 11.15 a Martinho Mendes intervention on sacred art in Madeira, from the perspective "The contemporary artistic in religious space ". At 11:45 am, Joaquim Félix, from the Catholic University, will speak on "Liturgical art with love: Creations of the new chapels of Braga". Then there is a debate, after which there is a lunch. In the afternoon, at 3 pm, the documentary "Sacred" by Nuno Grande will be screened. Finally, at 4:00 pm Guilherme d'Oliveira Martins will leave your message. The closing session will end with a speech by João Henrique Silva.

Neste mês de Março, o Museu de Arte Sacra do Funchal organiza a segunda edição do evento denominado “As Conferências do Museu”, num ano em que o Velho Continente Europa realiza uma ampla reflexão sobre o multifacetado património cultural europeu. “Cruzar a história e seus legados com o olhar da contemporaneidade é a proposta destas Conferências”, esclarece a direcção do MASF. O enquadramento inicial deste acontecimento cultural regista ainda o contributo de Tolentino Mendonça, padre e poeta madeirense, numa conferência de abertura, cujo tema é “Arte, Mediação e Símbolo: O sentido que vem”.
Já para o encerramento,Guilherme d’Oliveira Martins, coordenador nacional do programa do Ano Europeu do Património Cultural, fará uma intervenção. Ainda no âmbito das Conferências será exibido o filme “Sagrado”, de Nuno Grande, a assinalar o fecho de dois dias de partilha de conhecimentos em torno da arte, do património e da museologia.

Meia hora mais tarde, Maria Isabel Roque, da Universidade Europeia, discorrerá sobre o tema “A Arte Sacra: museus e exposições numa sociedade secularizada”. Às 15h30, Helena Rebelo (Universidade de Aveiro/Universidade da Madeira) aborda “A Tradição das “Saloias” nas visitas das insígnias do Espírito Santo na Região Autónoma da Madeira: musealizar um património imaterial?”
Às 16h15, Sandra Saldanha, do Secretariado Nacional dos Bens Culturais da Igreja, falará sobre a gestão e missão cultural dos mesmos. Já pelas 16h45, Joaquim Ganhão, do Museu Diocesano de Santarém, irá abordar esta instituição e “A face visível de um alargado projecto de salvaguarda e valorização do património cultural da Diocese”. Segue-se debate, novamente moderado por Duarte Nuno Chaves.
No dia 2 de Março, o painel 2, onde as questões de arte sacra em foco serão desta vez “A construção do espaço sagrado”, será moderado por Duarte Caldeira, do Gabinete de Projectos Massa Cinzenta. Pelas 9h30 Bernardo Pizarro Miranda, do Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, abordará o assunto “Existe uma arquitectura religiosa?”, e meia hora mais tarde, a natureza dessa mesma arquitectura em Portugal, nos sécs. XX e XXI, será a temática da palestra de João Alves da Cunha, da Universidade Católica Portuguesa. João Norton Matos, da Faculdade Jesuíta de Paris, irá proferir uma alocução intitulada “Artes e arquitectura na mediação do sagrado”, seguindo-se, às 11h15, uma intervenção de Martinho Mendes, sobre a arte sacra na Madeira, na perspectiva “O contemporâneo artístico no espaço religioso”. Às 11h45, Joaquim Félix, da Universidade Católica, falará sobre “Arte litúrgica com amor: Criações das novas capelas de Braga”. Segue-se debate, havendo depois um almoço. À tarde, pelas 15 horas, será projectado o documentário “Sagrado”, de Nuno Grande. Finalmente, às 16 horas Guilherme d’Oliveira Martins deixará a sua mensagem. A sessão de encerramento terminará com uma alocução de João Henrique Silva.
