A limestone votive plaque depicting a manifestation of the deity Bastet in the form of a cat. 

Measuring 20.5 centimeters high, this piece (51.2474) is now found in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, in the United States. 

Bastet is a goddess of fertility, pleasure, protection, music, dance, and war and a bringer of good health.

Its preservation and exhibition allow contemporary viewers to appreciate and understand the symbolic and cultural richness of the art of ancient Egypt. 

A work is more than an artistic representation; It is a guide to the beliefs and values of the Ptolemaic civilization, providing a tangential connection with the spirituality and artistic expression of distant times.

She wears a necklace of cowrie shells with a pendant in the form of the eye of Horus. As a counterpoise, a lotus flower is attached to the clasp in the back. This work is brilliantly carved in raised relief and is dated to the Ptolemaic Period (304-30 BCE).

The significance of the cowrie shells is explained through their ancient magical association with fertility—due to their resemblance to the female vulva—and/or protection, as a result of the resemblance to a squinting eye against the ill-will of or envy by others.
